Flooding in the Digital Twin Earth: The Case Study of the Enza River Levee Breach in December 2017

The accurate delineation of flood hazard maps is a key element risk management policy. Flood inundation models are fundamental for reproducing the boundaries flood-prone areas, but their calibration limited to information available on areas affected by during observed events (typically fragmentary photo, video or partial surveys). In recent years, Earth Observation data have supported monitoring and emergency response (e.g., Copernicus Emergency Service) thanks proliferation satellite sensors, also at high spatial resolution. Under this umbrella, study investigates levee breach that occurred in December 2017 along Enza River, right tributary Po caused large area including Lentigione village. event simulated with 2D hydraulic model using images calibrate roughness coefficients. results show processing timing high-resolution imagery reliable representation flooded area.
